About SBHRA >>
The Swedish-Burmese Human Rights Association (SBHRA) is an organization located in Sweden with its main membershipbase being Swedes, Burmese in-exiles, and other Burma interested people living in Sweden. The main aim of the organization it to create a network of the Burmese in-exiles here in Sweden, in order to generate a body of support for actions taken in espousal of the world-wide Burmese pro-democracy movement. Membership is also open for non-Burmese nationals. By pooling all the resources into one unit, one organization, we hope to decrease the amount of energy spent on repetitive actions taken by individuals and organizations alike.
We believe that the tide has changed for Burma, that the fight for freedom is necessary and important, and that now is the time for the world to listen to our story, to understand our suffering and to help in our cause. To accomplish this SBHRA has set up three primary goals that will help us focus our efforts and to assist other organizations and individuals understand what we do, what we are and what our purpose is. These goals have been decided by the board of our organization and are the very foundation of each of the decisions coming from SBHRA. If any action is not aligned with these three simple goals in any way, then it is not for us to work with. By simplifying things this way we run the risk of missing out on 1% of important information from time to time, but more importantly it helps us focus and make the most of the remaining 99%!
These goals of ours is:
- Awareness - Awarenessrising - To raise local and global awareness regarding the past and current situation in Burma using tools and methods best suited for success. On the local level we lecture and explain about the Burmese cause, as well as organizing and participating in manifestations, demonstrations and events. Where there is an opportunity for us to raise awareness we want to be present. On the global scale we use our second goal which is:
- Network - Building strong networks between organizations and individuals working for a free Burma. Unifying the efforts and spreading information on current goals and activities.
- Integration - To assist in integrating exile Burmese people into the society, with a primary focus on Sweden. Though the Swedish society is an open and democratic environment, arriving as a foreigner and adopting to the cultural, social and environmental differences is not as easy as it could and should be. This is an area we hope to influence.
